Ladies who Lunch

Shiro – L/1, Pacific Place, Admiralty (2155 8066)

Sushi lovers have died and gone to heaven. Leave it to the fashionable Lane Crawford to unfurl a stylish sushi bar right next to the shoe section – as if Louboutins weren't mouthwatering enough. In addition to traditional table seating there are two kaiten-sushi belts and a bar area that seats up to 25 diners in this sleekly designed restaurant by David Yeo of the Aqua group. The fish is flown in daily from the famed Tsukiji market in Tokyo and for the carnivores there is also aged Wagyu beef on the menu, would you expect anything less? There is a good selection of house wines and cocktails such as sake spritzers and the shiro lychee mojito – a perfect mid-day pick-me-up. Split the set menu for two (HK$688) with your faithful shopping companion.

Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor Restaurant and Bar – 15 Queen's Road, Central (3695 3389)

For those of you who are fans of the Fifth Floor Restaurant in London, you'll be happy to find that the décor is equally smart but ambiance a bit mellower and the prices less extortionate (we didn't say cheap, mind you). The restaurant overlooks the busy thoroughfare of Queen's Road and we do recommend booking a table by the window, while on the opposite wall bold yellows and reds are blended into silver mesh zigzag screens. The Fourth Floor Restaurant is open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner and the cuisine is best described as Modern British or Modern European. Typical dishes will include Braised Ox Cheek, Macaroni with Porcini Mushrooms or Tomato consommé with basil sorbet. The afternoon tea has all the trimmings – scones, clotted cream, cucumber sandwiches – without needing to book a flight back to the UK.

Agnès b. le pain grillé  – 111 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay (2577 2718)

Located on a quiet street with a tranquil courtyard entrance as you enter this Parisian-styled café from French design queen Agnès b. you'd be forgiven for wondering which continent you were on. Le pain grillé is decorated like a nineteenth-century Parisian bistro and it serves unpretentious French classics in a welcoming atmosphere. The set lunch ranges from HK$118-HK$198 depending on your options which include risotto, roast chicken, grilled beef short rib with dessert or cheese platter an additional HK$30. Le pain grillé even has its own cuvée of red, white and rosé wines as well as monogrammed tableware for sale if you're looking for an unusual memento.

The Brunch Club70 Peel Street, SoHo (2526 8861)

The Brunch Club is perhaps a misnomer since it is open every day from 8am-11pm serving everything from your morning Cuppa Joe (fair trade, of course) to your nightcap. A very neighborhood place, this is a favorite haunt of freelance writers and budding bloggers for its free Wifi and plethora of reading material. They also have board games on hand to entertain kiddies (or boring adults) and a courtyard garden for dining al fresco. On weekdays from 12:30-2:30pm a very reasonable 3-course set lunch menu is available with offerings such as Insalata Caprese or lobster soup.

OVOlogue66 Johnston Road, Wanchai (2527 6088)

In the same grade-two heritage listed building that houses The Pawn, the lifestyle company that operates both OVO Home and OVO Garden has just opened OVOlogue in the 4,300 sq.ft. ground floor space. The concept of OVOlogue is food cum gallery, hence the area is divided into different sections one for dining and others for exhibiting art and furniture. The menu covers various Chinese cuisines including dishes such as sweet and sour pork with dried fruits and sweetened aged vinegar, braised coral trout in Sichuan sauce and a gourmet dim sum platter of goldfish and phoenix dumplings among other delicacies.
