Spanish food
|
| How this restaurant dropped into Shenzhen town is quite in accident. Susan, a Chinese lady, has a great love of Spanish food. So her husband, a British gentleman, opened a small Spanish restaurant near their home, hired a Spanish chef (Xavier) to direct the real deal, and off they went. You will be glad they did it, too. The Tapas (38RMB+ but no small sizes) are very tasty, while the big dish of Paella (155RMB, shared with friends), is a real winner. Plus, if you love Sangria (150RMB/for 3-4ppl) then you will be in heaven. In the name of love, Susan helps with the daily stuff and quality-checks every dish. If you don't know what to choose, she will recommend you many specialities. Super! And for the vegetarians among us, the big salad (43RMB+) and Soup of the Day (35RMB) will definitely satisfy your cravings. Oh, and by the way, you're going to love the source containers on the table - just don't steal them.

Korean food

| This is definitely not a good venue to dine alone but chatting or play-fighting with friends or your family on a big table is a real goer here. In other words, it's got "awesome BBQ" written all over it. Opened by a Korean lady, the restaurant presents a big and clean place to ply down plates of kimgee. But the real draw is the orean
barbecue, which is simply mouth-watering, is the set dinner package at 238RMB for 4 people with free imported Korean fruit juice and tasty pumpkin soup. It's also gigantic, so you might not know where to start. But no worries, it's time to fight with the stainless steel chopsticks with your friends. PS, they are not easy to handle. Have fun, and good luck!

Southeast Aisan food
|
| A restaurant by day, a bar by night: Chili Padi is sandwiched on both sides by watering holes, yet it holds its own as a venue for the food hunter who loves Southeast Asian bites. If you are not a one-country crabber,
and also searching for something spicy from Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand, then we advise you to come here first before going out for a beer. Then again, Chili Padi already has hundreds of wines for your consideration. Recommended most are their seafood and their curry kebabs, which are outstanding.
The waitresses each have that Malaysian style (with sweet smiles!) while the manager serves you like a VIP. It's a place to relax and unwind with friends, and there is no need to rush your food. Great stuff!

Hangzhou food
|
| Your first impression of Hangzhou might very well be the same first mpression you get here - graceful, delicate, clean, and extremely tidy. The décor, with lotus embroidery on the walls, keeps things modern yet familiar with its fashionably retro style. The dishes do likewise. Hangzhou cuisine offers small delicate dishes and are a little bit sweeter than Shanghai cuisine. It never goes too far away from the tried and trusted ingredients, such as Chun'an
ham (淳安腊肉) and bamboo shoots. Even their Jimao Cai (鸡毛菜) is flown in from Hangzhou by air, and yet every bite was fresh and juicy. Strongly ecommended are the Lin'an Bamboo Shoots fried with Meat (临安春笋炒腩肉 38RMB) and the Xihu Honey Lotus Root with sicky rice (西湖蜜糖糯米22RMB) – either as a slight dessert or a main dish. But what if you have never been to Hangzhou before? If so, why not buy some specialties like Hangzhou White Daisy (杭白菊28RMB/box). They are the same price as a box of Twinings ... ... |

| This might just be one of the most convenient bars around, being situated at the King Glory metro, and lthough In Club is hardly a new spot for Shenzhen clubbers, we'd like to point out that it's just undergone a great renovation – so the hip-hop and electric cuts should be banging better than ever. They still keep their darkly red color decoration, and cool dancer's "pool", but a few new accessories have been added into the mix. If you are going to organize a private party, you could do much worse than booking this place. Recommended.

| Since relocating to the Cruise Inn, X-TA-SEA still remains a premiere sports bar in town, with live and recorded sports coverage from Australia, Europe and America, including US college football/basketball, NFL, NBA , Rugby, Nascar, Formula 1 and much more. In other words, the Olympic Games definitely won't be overlooked this summer. For our sports lover, a football table, a pool table and their in-house dart tournaments should not be missed. And, in general, there are not only live bands playing blues and Hip-Hop but plenty of pub grub on offer too, like juicy steaks and beer snacks. A fine place for catching up with old friends or making new acquaintances, this joint can be counted on as a regular on the early nightlife list. And don't forget to join their 6th Year Anniversary party as well as Bill's (the owner) birthday celebrations on June 20. Result!

Fascinating lupine logic
AUTHOR: Jiang Rong AVAILABLE: Now
Wolf Totem is something very special. Millionsof Chinese have already been enchanted by this book, which is both an exciting tale of a Beijing student transplanted to remote Inner Mongolia and a fascinating anthropological, historical and environmental treatise. And now, the award- winning English translation by Howard Goldblatt is flying off the shelves so quickly that at least one greedy GZ book-shop has been able to charge almost double its 96RMB cover price. The book's phenomenal success is thanks not least to the years its author spent living on the grasslands, and there is a rare directness to his account of the relationships between the nomads and the wolves they simultaneously fear and revere, and between the "sheep-like" Han and the "wolf-like" Mongolians. At points, the development of the book's arguments is a little laboured, but on the whole this polypho ... ... |

| Oh no... it's Dragon Boat Festival again! (Duan Wu Jie, 端午节,June 8th, 2008, Lunar May 5th.) That means my Lunar birthday is coming. Do you believe I was born when my mum was cheering for the dragon boat race while making Zong zi? Seriously, here comes this significant national festival food. These Chinese rice dumplings are made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings (Canton style Zong zi is stuffed with skinless mung beans and 'fat' meat) and wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are cooked by steaming or boiling. The Cantonese like to have them daily for breakfast, yet it is traditionally served and eaten during this month's Dragon Boat Festival. Enjoy!
History
Commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet from the kingdom of Chu who lived during the Warring States period (278 BC), and who drowned himself in the Miluo river for his patriotism. According to legend, rice dumplings were thrown into the river to prevent fish from eating the poet's body, yet anoth ... ... |

Focaccino福卡其诺
We were starving when passing by this place without having had lunch (it was almost 3 o'clock). The waiter stopped us and said they wouldn't open for dinner until 5pm. What? A two hour wait? With a desperate look on our faces we turned to leave without any energy, but then she stopped us again and asked inside; moments later we were finally surprised to be let inside for an exceptionally late lunch (or early dinner?) with both a wide smile and a great window table. We were rescued, thank goodness! With such a warm-hearted and human welcome, we ordered the specialty, although they were still pre-cleaning the restaurant with smelly disinfectant. Authentic Northern Italian like focaccia is handmade from fresh dough direct from a top Italian baker. The name, which is mixed from Focaccia and Cappuccino aims to make real Italian cuisine with strong flavors. The Saute Escargot with White Wine Cream (白酒香炒田螺 RMB58) was fantastic, and at a v ... ... |

Dare to eat Bird's Nest Soup?
Yes, you're slurping swift's saliva...
It's often mentioned that Chinese people can eat anything, and especially the Cantonese, who are considered the most ?carnivorous foodies in the entire country. We all know the old joke—they'll eat anything that flies in the sky except a plane, anything that lives in the ocean except a boat, and so on. But bird's nests?
In reality, Bird's Nest is a rather luxurious delicacy from Southeast Asia and widespread (and extremely popular) around the Canton region. As long as something is nutritional or healthy, you can trust the Cantonese to cultivate and create it, even if that means collecting . . . bird's saliva.
Nest history
The Chinese name for Bird's Nest Soup, "yan wo(燕窝)", translates literally as a "swift's nest" (yan = swiftlet, wo = nest). A few species of the rare swift, for instance the cave swift, are renowned for build ... ... |
