Spanish food
|
| How this restaurant dropped into Shenzhen town is quite in accident. Susan, a Chinese lady, has a great love of Spanish food. So her husband, a British gentleman, opened a small Spanish restaurant near their home, hired a Spanish chef (Xavier) to direct the real deal, and off they went. You will be glad they did it, too. The Tapas (38RMB+ but no small sizes) are very tasty, while the big dish of Paella (155RMB, shared with friends), is a real winner. Plus, if you love Sangria (150RMB/for 3-4ppl) then you will be in heaven. In the name of love, Susan helps with the daily stuff and quality-checks every dish. If you don't know what to choose, she will recommend you many specialities. Super! And for the vegetarians among us, the big salad (43RMB+) and Soup of the Day (35RMB) will definitely satisfy your cravings. Oh, and by the way, you're going to love the source containers on the table - just don't steal them.

Korean food
|
| This is definitely not a good venue to dine alone but chatting or play-fighting with friends or your family on a big table is a real goer here. In other words, it's got "awesome BBQ" written all over it. Opened by a Korean lady, the restaurant presents a big and clean place to ply down plates of kimgee. But the real draw is the orean
barbecue, which is simply mouth-watering, is the set dinner package at 238RMB for 4 people with free imported Korean fruit juice and tasty pumpkin soup. It's also gigantic, so you might not know where to start. But no worries, it's time to fight with the stainless steel chopsticks with your friends. PS, they are not easy to handle. Have fun, and good luck!

Southeast Aisan food
|
| A restaurant by day, a bar by night: Chili Padi is sandwiched on both sides by watering holes, yet it holds its own as a venue for the food hunter who loves Southeast Asian bites. If you are not a one-country crabber,
and also searching for something spicy from Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand, then we advise you to come here first before going out for a beer. Then again, Chili Padi already has hundreds of wines for your consideration. Recommended most are their seafood and their curry kebabs, which are outstanding.
The waitresses each have that Malaysian style (with sweet smiles!) while the manager serves you like a VIP. It's a place to relax and unwind with friends, and there is no need to rush your food. Great stuff!

Hangzhou food

| Your first impression of Hangzhou might very well be the same first mpression you get here - graceful, delicate, clean, and extremely tidy. The décor, with lotus embroidery on the walls, keeps things modern yet familiar with its fashionably retro style. The dishes do likewise. Hangzhou cuisine offers small delicate dishes and are a little bit sweeter than Shanghai cuisine. It never goes too far away from the tried and trusted ingredients, such as Chun'an
ham (淳安腊肉) and bamboo shoots. Even their Jimao Cai (鸡毛菜) is flown in from Hangzhou by air, and yet every bite was fresh and juicy. Strongly ecommended are the Lin'an Bamboo Shoots fried with Meat (临安春笋炒腩肉 38RMB) and the Xihu Honey Lotus Root with sicky rice (西湖蜜糖糯米22RMB) – either as a slight dessert or a main dish. But what if you have never been to Hangzhou before? If so, why not buy some specialties like Hangzhou White Daisy (杭白菊28RMB/box). They are the same price as a box of Twinings ... ... |

| Always trust the Italians
Focaccino福卡其诺
We were starving when passing by this place without having had lunch (it was almost 3 o'clock). The waiter stopped us and said they wouldn't open for dinner until 5pm. What? A two hour wait? With a desperate look on our faces we turned to leave without any energy, but then she stopped us again and asked inside; moments later we were finally surprised to be let inside for an exceptionally late lunch (or early dinner?) with both a wide smile and a great window table. We were rescued, thank goodness! With such a warm-hearted and human welcome, we ordered the specialty, although they were still pre-cleaning the restaurant with smelly disinfectant. Authentic Northern Italian like focaccia is handmade from fresh dough direct from a top Italian baker. The name, which is mixed from Focaccia and Cappuccino aims to make real Italian cuisine with strong flavors. The Saute Escargot with White Wine Cream (白酒香炒田螺 RMB58) was fantastic, and at a v ... ... |

Where there's a seat
Steats Cafe 小茶座
It should be a delightful day when girls go to Steats Cafe. Its fashionable design is this: black & white spots and cutie graffiti bears on the wall surrounded with black cozy sofas and colorful latticework cushions. The visual identity is created by the young owner of the cafe, yet the cafe still reaches a quality of flavor in Western-style food with a light taste and low prices. Location is the point, just behind MixC and beside Trust Mart, so it's an ideal venue for having a break after a crazy shopping afternoon. But don't worry about the wait in queue because the likes of Honey Moon Dessert nad cozy sofas are awaiting you. Strongly recommended is the high-tea set at 18RMB including Steats Salad sarnies and Mango Pudding. If not, ask for a cup of Latte and kill a whole afternoon chatting with friends. Pure bliss.

Park here and glide right in...
Parkhaus
Forget every place you thought served great Western food because Parkhaus has them beat. You won't find cheap, greasy dishes in this polished and posh establishment. Instead, be prepared to be served like royalty while you dine on dishes like their roasted turkey dinner. Here you can feast on savory bruschetta, a feta-topped Greek salad and fettuccine with mushrooms, and guzzle it down with a variety of wines, ranging from a white with a hint of oak to a costly blood-red cabernet. Or, opt for something lighter and simply order the decadent cheese platter. Want to dine but short on time? Come in Monday-Friday for lunch where options like fish and chips served golden brown to perfection are available in a flash (and for a fraction of the price). Add all this to homemade cookies, moist brownies and carrot cake and you'll see why Parkhaus takes the cake when it comes to a taste of the West.

Like it, love it, gotta have it!
Cold Stone Creamery 酷圣石冰淇淋
Passing by the metro station at King Glory, and glancing at a new ice-cream store, a salesman passed me an
English training flier but telling me the store behind him sells "very good ice cream". Is he really the salesman of an English training center? Since opening in 1988 in America, Cold Stone finally set its first branch in Shenzhen in King Glory Plaza. You can customize your own ice cream creations or choose from the list special originals recommended by the serving team. You couldn't find another team more actively working together, full of passion, all day long (they even sing songs created by themselves but pinching a melody.) Forget the fat and sugar, although you can order a low-fat choice, as the super-premium ice cream and sorbet, freshly made and served up with your choice of mix-ins, really attracts your sweet tooth desires. We have no strong recommendation for a one par ... ... |

Tuscan dining by the lake
Vista Lago 意大利花园餐厅

If you are looking for a paradise far from the madding crowd, there's a new Swiss hotel complex that's moved to Shenzhen, hidden away deep between the mountains. Inside a greenhouse bordering a lake, an Italian restaurant there presents a warm welcome on a spring-blue evening. If you have no idea what dish you would like for your Tuscan cuisine, recommendations from waiters are one step away. The Rocket Salad (芝麻菜沙拉RMB88) is a perfect and healthy choice for vegetarians, made of roasted pears, walnuts and shaved parmesan cheese with balsamic vinaigrette. Strongly recommended is the Homemade Seafood Ravioli (海鲜意大利饺RMB168) with baby spinach and scampi mousseline. The Roasted Lamb Steak (烤羊扒), too, will definitely satisfy the meat lover in you. Low prices at high tea
Double Star Café 帝宝星
Shop 059, 2/F, King Glory Plaza, Luohu District (8261 1808) 罗湖区金光华广场2楼
Hong Kong's casually-themed cafe & restaurant now opens its first outlet in Chinese mainland, presenting a vibrant, relaxed and youthful venue for grabbing a cup of coffee or a set lunch. Well, that sounds a bit like advertising-speak to us but the proof really is in the pudding. Let's put it this way, although it mainly promotes its luxuriant English High Tea Set (88RMB for two), we spent for our set lunch around 40RMB/pp which included minestrone soup, freshly-baked bread, a French-styled main dish, a delicate dessert, and a big mug of coffee. Isn't it amazing to escape from a fast boring lunch? Furthermore, it's rare and encouraging to be served with Cantonese in Shenzhen. With simple and half-open decorations, the café looks like a tea-house rather than a Western café, yet the chef's selection will surprise y ... ... |
