Where to find music and art this month The after-effect of the Chinese New Year "over working spirit" is always strong. It's even more intense this year, with the enormous salvage operation from the disastrous snow storm which swept through southern China. More or less totally affected, most performing venues in Shenzhen remain rather quiet this month. Fortunately, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is coming back this month with three concerts. Opening up will be the collaboration between China's young yet already successful pianist Chen Sa and the SSO on March 7. Later on, a concert of Schuman's piano concerti on March 15 and the recital by another talented piano girl, Xue Yingjia, on March 21 are both recommended. More exciting performances can be found at the Longgang Culture Center in Longgang District. On March 9, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble will be in town to present local audiences their authentic Hungarian folk music and dances in the performa ... ...

A fabulous accessory is the best way to look "in" for a new season. Shoes and bags are the primary accessories. As winter is around the corner, you may have loads of options with regard to shoes but a pair of trendy high boots, which can go well with almost any kind of dress, skirt or jeans, is worth opening your wallet for. Rachel Bilson and Jessica Biel wear theirs with skinny jeans while Rihanna matches her above-theknee boots with fringes with her rock and punk uppers. In terms of bags, small-sized clutches and oversized bags are both popular this fall. Luxurious bejeweled hues and metallic tones seem to be the two main trends of this season. On the other hand, celebrities mostly prefer bags in low-key and casual color tones for daily use, such as Ashley Tisdale, Gisele Bundchen and Keira Knightley. Agyness Deyn is different. She has a small bag featuring long metallic 80s-style stud-andchains details, which reflects her unique ... ...

In China, once a woman announces her pregnancy, celebrations will abound! A girl? A boy? Oh, as long as its healthy! As pregnancy poses many risks to the health of both the mother and the baby, this statement often means a call to action as much as it is a sincere wish. In Chinese culture, many customs and superstitions surround the state of pregnancy and post-partum care. They function to protect the pregnant woman and newborn child from "malign influences," and to avert problems with pregnancy and birthing such as miscarriages and stillbirth. With the one-child policy in full force, its better to be safe than sorry, as the old adage goes. So if you're interested in appeasing those Chinese in-laws, or simply want to understand why yourself or your partner can't use glue or eat crab during the pregnancy, here's your foolproof guide. PRE-NATAL PRECAUTIONS: Do not use sharp objects, i.e. scissors and knives, on the bed because it can resu ... ...

Horse Riding

Not long ago, the Olympic equestrian competition wrapped up in Hong Kong. The coordination between the rider and the horse, and the elegance of the sport are what I've always found alluring. I think of the one riding a horse as a nobleman or a fierce knight. But let's not talk about my romanticism- let's talk about the physical advantages of horse riding. Mr. Ao of the Guangzhou Yingzi Equestrian Club informed me that according to a recent study, a 10 minute horse ride has a physical effect that is 100,000 times that of massage, while a 30 minute ride is the equivalent of jogging 2.5 km. That is to say, horse riding is an all-round aerobic exercise. Moreover, horses trot in a quadruple rhythm, which can massage the entire body. This rhythmic vibration can better relax our muscles and relieve pain in our shoulders and waist. Furthermore, the lower half of our body is pressed flat against the horse while it is moving. It can help shape our belly, hips and legs ... ...

As is the case for most expats in Guangzhou, you may find you have very limited choices when it comes to fitted clothes. Quite a few foreigners have told me that they seldom buy clothes here, and when they do, they go to the boutiques on Huale Lu only if it is really necessary. I have been to the shops on Huale Lu, and they mainly sell a selection of largesized T-shirts and jeans with no decoration or style whatsoever. Clothes are hung or piled up helter-skelter. What is the worse is that they also look second-hand. Well, you don't have to worry about it any more. A few select shops have opened in Guangzhou in the past few years. They have impressive selections of stylish, brand-name clothing in the sizes you need. These products are mostly either selected overseas or designed by local designers. Selling genuine goods, those shops are a tribute to the acute tastes of their bosses, which becomes apparent when talking to them, as their ideas concerning fa ... ...

How to …give and get guanxi

Schmoozing. Sucking up. Connections. 'Mutually beneficial relationships'. Call it whatever you want, honey, but here in China, its known simply as one word: Guanxi. Guan means close together, and Xi means relationship. You are your relationships; you are defined by your guanxi. It is much more than just friendship; it is your competitive advantage, your golden ticket to everything: securing that much-coveted contract, landing your dream home, and even gaining that long awaited promotion. Fortunes have been made and lost based on good or bad guanxi. It's also the notion that if somebody does you a favor, you will be expected to repay it one day. Put simply, it's the "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" philosophy. Cracking the  guanxi code may take impossible work and perseverance, but playing the game is still imperative. If you are open-minded and patient, as well as willing to bend over backwards, then you can start building guanxi immediately.   ... ...

A respite from the urban hustle Wow, this is the most luxury I've wallowed in until now. It's not easy for me to describe the decor and the layout here. Entering one single room, it was mainly decorated in soothing earth tones with black and blonde wood and pleasantly cool small stones. It was unusually large as there was a large double bed in it with a desk and a sofa alongside. Yet these only took up a third of the room! The rest was the spa area. The most notable part is the un-drawing of the curtain to reveal a glass wall showing a beautiful lake and hills. Amazing! It should belong in Hainan Island or Saipan, right? Before the spa, the staff conduct a questionare about my body conditions. I was then recommended a Balinese Massage and an Anti-Stress Facial. The Balinese Massage uses Indian deep oil, which greatly helped relieve tension, while the facial used exclusive sap made from 100% floral extract and bee wax to help fight signs of fatigue. This is surely due to be a ... ...

Watanabe Kosuke, a Japanese worker living in Guangzhou, believes every Japanese child has a secret dream to become a professional baseball player. In his youth, he rushed to the diamond field and practiced every day after school until sunset. And yet, even now that he is fully grown and working in the PRD, he still plays baseball every weekend with Japanese, Chinese and American friends. So, last Sunday, I joined them for a game. Wearing a helmet, I became a batter. The bat was said to be only 800g but it seemed really heavy in my hands. I was also nervous as hell. "Play ball!" Kosuke San shouted, and threw the ball toward me. "Pong"! Unbelievably, I hit it clean. Not as difficult as I imagined! A few more swings later,I finally saw that it wasn't so much to do with your vision as your senses. Later, I attempted to pitch while Kosuke San became batter. He told me I had to throw the ball "super- fast" so that my opponent could not strike it. I i ... ...
