Art Multiple
Venue : Ke Center
Date : 2008-5-8
This Exhibition presents nearly 200 works of art from 35 different artists and ten different countries. The “Art Multiple” concept refers to artworks which involve a large number of editions, which allow them to reach a larger audience. This enlarges the scope of art appreciation and allows work to be collected at a relatively affordable price. This concept was started in the early 1960s and today there are a number of galleries and institutions specialized in working with multiples. When the gavel hammers down on an auctioneer’s sale, it’s no longer just in New York or London. In fact, Hong Kong is now the third largest art market in terms of auction sales after these capitals. Despite the rage for Chinese contemporary art, Hong Kong also has a distinct advantage over the mainland because there is no tax on the import or export of art. With these considerations in mind, this year Hong Kong will host its first truly international contemporary and modern art fair, ART HK 08, with the participation of leading Asian and international galleries. Quietness can be a metaphor for the process of artistic creation, more specifically the artist engaged alone for hours, slowly and meticulously realizing his or her work. This isolation is essential to the quietness necessary in the creation, which transfers later into the serene tone of the work. Art+Shanghai warmly welcomes members of the press and public to preview Quietness: A Group Exhibition highlighting five emerging Chinese artists whose works exhibit a tranquil artistic expression. Chen Chunlin
Venue : M97 Gallery
Date : 2008-4-16
Chunlin's work focuses on the interaction between the photographer, people and a place - using photography to take a reading (as if a face reading 面相)。 He calls the series “相" xiang in chinese is because of the various implications of the character 相: 照相, 面相, 互相, etc. In a way the work is anthropological as a survey/study of a certain time with a certain people and place. He often adds the formal element of a studio backdrop for the individual portraits so as to allow the viewer to focus as if they were formal portraits, but leaves enough of the surrounding environments around the edges to give some indication of the feeling of the scenery and local environment.
